Nikita Khrushchev
He was Joseph Stalin's successor and was known for his public denouncement of Stalin's abuse of power in 1956. This denouncement shocked top Communist party members. His policy of de-Stalinization included freeing many political prisoners, toning down censorship, and calling for a “peaceful coexistence” with the West. However, he had no tolerance when discontented Hungarians revolted in 1956 and sent tanks to crush them. He also despised critics who were too bold.
Khrushchev was also known for telling the West, “We shall bury you,” during the Cold War. Falsely believed to be a military threat, Khrushchev explained that the statement meant capitalism was doomed and communism was the wave of the future. This site gives a very in-depth look into Khrushchev's political and economic actions during his reign. It also discusses his relationship with U.S. President John F.
