The primary purpose/function of NATO was to ensure freedom and security to all member countries. After forming at the end of World War II, NATO was created to defend member nations against the troops of communist countries, such as Soviet Russia and China. NATO's other purposes were maintaining peace and U.S. presence in Europe, preventing a revival of military nationalism, and creating political unity. Lastly, NATO was supposed to help ease tensions between the East (Russia) and West (United States).
The original members of NATO in 1949 were the United States, Great Britain, Canada, France, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
